A Lomo is one of the more "sophisticated" toy camera makers (compared to
the manufacturers of Dianas and Holgas, for example). They've made many
models over the years so it's difficult to comment on your friend's camera
without knowing which one he has.

I've got a Lomo 8M and can tell you a little about that model. I think I
paid $16.00 at Freestyle in Hollywood. The body is made of plastic, but it
has an aluminum lens barrel with glass optics: a surprisingly sharp 40mm
coated lens. Aperture can be set normally or pictographically. You must
zone or distance focus. It has a "compur" like shutter (you have to cock
the shutter each time you shoot), with speeds of something like 1/60-1/250.
You can set the shutter normally or pictographically as well.

I've used the camera on occasion for fun, and have made relatively
successful snaps with it. It's a little more reliable - and thus, a bit
less interesting, IMO - than a Diana or Holga.
