It is the responsibility of a mail reading program, not a mail sending program, to wrap long lines. It is better to send very long lines, because then the reader's program can wrap to fit his own screen. If the sender wraps lines to some length, and the reader's screen is not exactly that width, then the reader will see a double-wrapped message, which is much more difficult to read.

Here is that same paragraph with the lines wrapped to 85 characters. Many of you will find this much more difficult to read:
