Tristan,
Sacramento State University has an excellent MFA in photography AND it is
inexpensive. Have you already looked at CCAC here in Oaklnd, the
photojournalism school at UCBerkeley? (Ken Light is the contact there). I
can put you in touch with a Sac State grad if you like.
If photojournalism interests you, I also have a friend who bought a police
scanner for Alameda County and just started rushing off whenever anything
happened. It wasn't long before he was on staff for 2 papers.
And don't forget Duke University in South Carolina.
The printer in Sacramento that I gave you also mentored a young friend of
mine for a year...you might ask him if needs an assistant...he would rather
train you than get someone with "different " technique. As I said before, if
you have the chance he is worth it.
I did enough university for medicine and I taught myself the photography,
with a couple of classes and a lot of study. It probably cost as much as
going to Univ. but I did get to do what I wanted to do.
I also have a good library if you would like to browse.

If you aren't happy - leap!
