Subject: [Leica] freshness (was Mark Rabiner's)

slightly tangential, but what tests (if any) do people use to check
freshness of their chemistry?

with developer, could you drop in film leader for some amount of time, stop
fix and wash and then check density?

with fixer, poeple drop in a film leader and measure time to clear and
then fix for 3 times that amount. but how clear is clear? i've had old
fixer that left the film base about .10 denser than the same film with
fresh fixer. (i refixed and the film was fine).

how about freshness of hypo-clear?

with some of the larger chemistry sizes we are all encountering, it would
be reassuring to be able to have ways of checking the potency of our
brews. not all of us go through 5 liters of xtol in a week!

thanks,
