It's not a glasses protector - the regular eye piece - and the magnifier,
are rubber ringed, but it certainly is a magnifier. You can probably find a
lot of discussion about it in the archives.

I think Leica makes a magnifier that goes over the eyepiece. It magnifies
the viewfinder and it provides a little protection for your glasses.
