The expectation is that if non-suffering people (yes I know, not all) know
that others are suffering that the non-sufferers will generously help out
the sufferers.  For many, the quote form the Bible,  "remember the poor" has
meaning and motivation for charitable acts.  The photography communicates
the suffering in the world and the knowledge of that suffering motivates
many people to respond.  Look at the generous outpouring of Americans in the
wake of September 11 - and, all to often, the irresponsible behavior of the
intermediaries (charitable organizations).
