Subject: [Leica] Luftwaffen Leica - how to tell fake?

LUGpeeps:

A friend of mine sent me an email today, telling me that he had found a
Leica in his basement. He wanted to know if it was worth anything, so I
asked about serial number and stuff. Anyhow, this is what he says:

"S/N is 338476 and it has an FI No38079 on it also. It says Ernst Leitz
Wetzlar on top. On the leather on the back it says Luftwaffen-Eigentum,
I think. The second word is almost obliterated. The lens on it is
1:35. Some of the dials have brass showing through and the leather case
is a mess. Other than that it looks damn good."

What do you think? I don't think he knows anything about it, but he was
a photographer in the US Navy about ten years ago. I've already asked
him for some digital photos. What should I look for? I've done a
little searching on fakes, but they're too close for me to tell. Is
there an easy giveaway? Thanks for your help!

Regards,
Colin
