With an AF SLR at least you can _see_ that the focus had locked onto
something. When I was first thinking of getting a rangefinder I considered
the Contax G2. I'm now glad that I didn't for all sorts of reasons, but the
autofocus is the main one. I have a Rollei 35 back in the UK (one of the
cheap Singapore ones) but the lack of a rangefinder and the lens performance
stopped me from carrying it everywhere. I believe that the European models
had a better quality lens - reflected in their price on the used marked.

Steve, this is my main problem with autofocus--sure, in some situations it
helps
but I spend just as much time on trying to *defeat* the autofocus when using
my
Ricoh GR1 or any other AF camera. The other issue I have with the AF
compacts is
the long shutter lag--I guess I have been spoiled by my Leica Ms. This is
why I
have now settled on the Rollei 35 as my pocket camera--no automation, short
shutter lag (although the release is not as smooth as on a Leica M), if the
picture is out of focus it is MY fault only...
