A number of us on the LUG own and use Televids and APO-Televids -- I
believe Roy Zartarian uses his for birding photography with an R, and I
have used mine with a number of SLR's but not with an R, as I don't own
such a camera.

The APO-Televid is a stunning spotting scope and immensely capable. A new
Televid 62 has just been announced: with the photo adapter, this produces
a 640mm f/10.6 lens. There is also a Digital Adapter for the Digilux 1:
with the Televid 62, this yields 800mm and f/12.9, while, with the 77, this
produces a 1000mm f/13.

Optical quality depends on whether you are speaking of the excellent
Televid or the superb APO-Televid -- I suspect that the APO-Telyt would out
perform either, though, as the optical needs of a visual instrument are a
tad different than those of a photographic lens.

And then, of course, there is the Zeiss Diascope 65 and 85 .... which ALSO
have photo adapters available.
