I bought all of the Leica equipment that served me for the next 25 years
while a student at college. Altho my parents paid room and tuition (thanks,
Mom and Dad!), any extras were my own responsibility. Almost all of the
camera equipment was used gear, and certainly all of it was at the expense
of other college "standard equipment" - stereo, spring break holidays, etc.
It was a matter of a two-fold approach: 1) setting priorities (I ate a lot
of beans) and 2) thinking more like a merchant than a consumer (I worked odd
jobs, took passport photos, sold stuff, etc). Most of the equipment, in
fact, was bought while studying in Europe and working for about $1.00 per
hour.

Actually, after marriage and kids, it was much harder to afford Leica
equipment. My two M2's and four lenses from college days were all I had
until my own kids graduated from college.
