Looks like the meter was blinded by the enormous light gathering power of 
the Noctilux.

My Noctilux is neatly stored in our emergency kit along with a candle. In 
case of a power failure, I light the candle and hold it in front of the 
Noctilux set a f/1.0 . The beam coming out of the other end will light a 
city block.
