This was in my pre-Leica days and I was carrying a couple of Nikons and assorted lenses. I asked at information and was directed to the US Customs office which is ground level in one of the terminals there (forgot which one). I took the airport shuttle and walked right up to the desk with my camera bag (there was no line). They gave me a small form on which I listed all my gear and serial numbers. They checked serial numbers and stamped the form. Total time including round trip shuttle was about 30 minutes leaving me with another 4.5 hours to kill. I don't know if it was necessary as I've never been asked when returning from overseas trips with camera gear, but it provides a bit of piece of mind and is a lot easier to keep up with than copies of receipts.
