Actually, the front element is extremely hard but the coating was quite
soft, as Leitz was barred from using Zeiss' vacuum-coating methods until
the late 1950's.  Thus, many of these lenses have coating abrasions or
drying -- examination under magnification will reveal a "dried mud"
pattern.  This can be readily removed and a new coating applied by a
competent repair shop.
