The techniques that I developed are widely known and widely used. The 
reason there is a problem with some data is entirely one of commercial 
profitability in the software industry. Every company that makes and sells 
computer software has a strong interest in making sure that it uses a 
format that changes often--so people will have to buy upgrades--and that is 
obscure and secret--so that other companies' software will not work as well 
with that format. There's no competitive advantage in commercial software 
using an archival format that will still work centuries from now; it 
doesn't help them make more money.
