Good morning Steve.  Your bar picture,

seems like you metered including the bright light between the couple causing
you fits to keep detail in the man's face.  Unless I completely miss the
point of the picture to make the man the dark one.  Artistically, the
picture either needs much more space on the right or much less: as the image
appears  it looks like you framed quickly with whatever lens you had and
took an image.  So, less space to focus us in on the couple, more space to
show more environment or alienation.

Just an opinion, art conquers all.
