No need to shed tears for the likes of Kosinski. Besides, I think that
gallows humor has it own charm. Wags like Kosinski come and go, as
servility itself is a privilege and not a burden with many. 
The character's ethical wrangling in Sophie's Choice is not that
separated from what took place in the East, when individuals making the
braid of cultural life had to 'prove' themselves to the West for
acceptance. It makes individuals from Mann to Solzhenitsyn that much
more worthy of our respect.
And I think all mentioned were, are, Leica users.
