Subject: [Leica] Dear Doctor Blacktape,
I do not understand.

How can you take photographs and still keep your camera in new
condition.

Is there another use for Leica M cameras that I am not aware of?
Something that has nothing to do with photograph but more on the lines
of fetish? I mean am I missing out on something here?

Dr. Blacktape is quite surprised that you are unaware of the many
non-photographic uses for Leica cameras. For instance, many people purchase
them solely to place them in safes because, abhorring vacuums, they need
something with which to fill up the safes. (These people will tell you that
they have purchased the Leicas as "investments," but as anyone who purchased
Pfizer stock in the pre-Viagra days can tell you, a modern Leica may be a
parking lot for your money, but it is certainly not an investment.)

Other people purchase Leicas because they have a desperate need to show
off - they know that Leicas are expensive, and, therefore, assume that
everyone else knows that Leicas are expensive. Therefore, they believe that
if they wander around with a Leica around their neck, the riffraff will
believe them to be non-riffraff. (The problem with this theory is that very
few of the riffraff know what a Leica is, let alone what it costs - so these
folks would be much better off purchasing Rolex knockoffs.)

Other people purchase Leicas to use - on Christmas and Little Scooter's
birthday. On those special occasions, the Leica, in its NeverReady case, is
taken from its special cabinet, loaded with a roll of slide film, and
oh-so-carefully used to expose the single roll of film. (And God help Little
Scooter if he gets his cake smeared paws anywhere near Gramps's camera.)

Dr. Blacktape hopes that this clears up your confusion, and appreciates your
noticing that, with the exception of the Communism thread, things have been
far too polite and calm on the LUG for several days. ;-)
