Hi Greg,
You may well need the following and more!

Hard hat,
gas mask.
rain coat for the water cannon
boots with safety toes
a water proof covering of some sort for your Leica gear

And that's before it gets down and dirty! :-(

It's not the locals you need to worry about, it's the brain dead morons who
come to these things merely to fight the system for something to do. The
dangerous "all in black" clowns who know the forests and mountains will be a
challenge, but they want to take on the challenge for media hype attention
and to test the security system. It's a game to them and has nothing to do
with any world wide worth.

If I had my druthers about going to these scenes just to take pictures for
something to do, I'd think several times before going as they can become
wild and ugly faster than you can spit. Certainly if you don't have your
gear insured for re-placement.. If someone is paying you to photograph the
nonsense that's different, then you build in cost of repairs or replacement
of any damaged or destroyed camera gear.

Best place to see what's going on? On the idiot box, unless you absolutely
have to be there. I mean you're entering into the twilight zone of idiocy,
as many of these "out of towners" are merely hooligans and shit disturbers
bent purely on creating as much havoc as possible without fear of who gets
hurt, smashed down or gear destroyed.

However, even knowing all this you'll probably still go! ;-)
