I've heard that not only is it is in a short period of time at high
temperatures; 

but its put on the film in a spray. A steaming hot spray. (I'm exaggerating)

As you say once the negatives are fried that's it.
Another option would be bringing it to a pro lab where they develop it
in tank and make a contact sheet just like we would if we had the time
and inclination.

It's a shame because we can make bad or mediocre prints from OK negs all
we want. But in the years to come we'll be better printers with possibly
better gear to print with. Then we REPRINT those negs and it's a whole
new ballgame.
