I have the Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 which I paid lots of money for but now
that Polaroid has gone bankrupt they were as of 1-2 months ago offloading
these scanners for $700. If you can get one they are great and for $40 more
you can control it using VueScan.

Subject: [Leica] I need an improved film negative/slide scanner...

Hi folks,

I got a Canoscan D600U flatbed scanner a few weeks ago for dirt cheap and
it's great for making scans off prints but for slide scanning I haven't
gotten any reasonable results yet. I tried out two slides- one shot on
Ektachrome and the other on Provia and both slides turned out alright for
web display but not for my upcoming pdf book I'm working on. Therefore, it
is a disappointing bargain so far. The question is:

1) Do flatbad scanners scan negatives better than slides? I have no clue
about this one.

2) I would probably want to invest in a $600 or less dedicated film scanner.
Which would you recommend? A Nikon Coolscan, Epson 2450, or a Polaroid
sprintscan or a higher end Canoscan film scanner?

3) Any advice on dust and scratches removal software? Does this option (e.g.
digital ICE) exist with the packaged scanner or is it separate?

Granted, digital imaging isn't easy for a newcomer. And investing into it is
probably worth it esp. when I will be interested in doing more and more
archival prints later on.

sincerely, Alfie
