It is actually a relevant topic for a tourist (as well as the locals). I remember there
were some plans, even testing of installing coin-operated public toilets in NYC when I
lived in New Jersey in the first half of the 90s but apparently those were shelved.
Personally I usually just go into a McDonalds or Burger King when I need to pee and
there is no conveniently located public toilet nearby. Those places are usually crowded
with customers, so nobody will notice a non-customer sneaking in to use the facilities.
