My guess would be that a "point of departure" describes your stance 
towards the world and what aspects of it you choose to show.  In other 
words, I would think it's a combination of both what you shoot, and 
how, as a result of whom you are and what drives you to take pictures.  
Examples might be showing skills or dedication of your subjects.  Or 
their living conditions and struggle for a better life.  Or perhaps 
giving a sense of place.  An appreciation of small scale beauty.  
Spirituality through nature.  All of these -- and of course many more 
- -- could be points of departure.
