Subject: [Leica] Serial no. question

I was recently offered a 1a converted to a Standard. The jpegs indicated that the serial no. in front of the accessory shoe had been sanded off. I can't see anything else about the camera that would indicate that it isn't authentic.
This isn't the first early rangefinderless Leica that I've seen with the serial no. effaced. Is there some reason that this would have been done that is escaping me?

Curious in Ottawa,

Mark
