It was the French to design (engineer) the hydraulic suspension. French also
was the De Dion independent rear axle (1923, I believe).
The French had very advanced auto designs for their time up to WW-II.
Afterwards, they were surpassed by other countries.

In 1994, while in Milano, I tested and used a home security alarm that, IMHO
was the most unobtrusive, convenient, efficient, and secure.
It even came with a remote control similar to the a car keyless device. It
was made in France, of French design.

Each country contributes something. To make a blanket statement that "French
engineering is no good" (my example) is gross exaggeration.

I will admit that standardazation is not a French trait. I recall driving a
Citroen (also in 1994) which had the horn button at the end of the turn
signal lever.
