I'm getting a check for a reasonable amount for something outside my normal income (=not self-evidently part of the family budget). From the outset I thought I'd use it to buy a good digital camera, something with a Nikon mount in order to reuse some glass. Then it hit me ... I'm looking at about the same amount an M7 would cost me. Now I haven't purchased a new Leica in about 30 years (to the month). A digital might last me 30 months. Despite all, they are still moving targets. Now metering has never really been a "problem" for me. Part of my way of working with rangefinders involves metering by hand ... out of necessity, considering the cameras I have, but I've never felt that it was a problem. I like taking a couple of readings in advance and then eyeball it as the scene progresses and make quick adjustments when needed. I usually don't even re-meter. One can pick up good M6's (new) + some glass for the price of an M7. (BD has me thinking about the 35/1.4 Summilux (current) or the 28/2.0) Those who have gone over to the M7 ... do you feel like you gained a lot? I know I like AE in other cameras (F3), but I've never missed it in a rangefinder. Anyway, ... I started thinking ... I'll get a lot more for my money with Leica and can probably be satisfied with a P&S digital, like Tina pointed out, until things stabilize. In digital I want at least EI 1600.
