Dave,

I am not sure it applies across the board. I have bought several items 
in EU countries lately which had a 1-year warranty; and on the other 
hand, I remember getting the 2-year warranty on my Leica stuff since I 
got into the habit in 1998, including the 5-year warranty on my R8, 
bought in 1999 or 2000.
