They are called TLD's (top-level domains), and there is an infinite supply of them.
So no one can own them all. Things like .NET and .COM and .US and .INFO and .SEX are just the tip of the iceberg.

There is a huge, expensive, and intensely political war going on between the "trademarks should rule the universe" faction (pack leader: IBM) and the "democracy should rule the universe" faction (pack leader: EFF) over whether or not any government has the right to limit the number of TLDs.

There are about 1,200 TLD's in existence. The US government blocks access to those that it does not approve, but the approval process is entirely driven by trademark holders. If you know what the statement "point your resolver at 192.147.236.1" means, and if you do it, you will be able to see all of the others.

I've been tempted to create .LEICA, so that

or
	http://richpinto.stores.leica/
could be valid domains.
