Subject: [Leica] okay all you supposed street photographers....

i went to the opening of the Louis Faurer show at the philadelphia museum of
art yesterday and was duely impressed. typically today street photography
seems to be a rather random popping of the shutter as events unfold, but
faurer, photographing with a 35mm kodak in the 40's and onward was not
afraid to leap into people's faces and purposfully frame a shot. some of his
composition is exquisite -- not random street moments, but rather found
images among the hustle and bustle of new york, philadelphia, and paris. in
the 1970's faurer got "discovered" and started doing assignments for vogue
and flash. much of his color work falls flat. in the way of weegee, i think,
once he was identified as an "artist" he stopped following the direction of
his heart and instead began to take images which he hoped would please new
york. his early photos though, are definately worth the price of admission
if you fancy yourself a street photographer and happen to be in the city of
brotherly love.

i was pleased to see some of the philadelphia art mafia at the opening, and
celeberties like philly's own David Graham. but NO LUGGERS! what's with
that?!
