By complete serendipity, I walked by a local art gallery here in Toronto,
the Stephen Bulger Gallery, several weekends ago. There was a photograph
in the window that looked vaguely familiar, with the word Magnum below it.
Of course, I walked in! It was "50 Years of Magnum", a display of about 25
prints or so, by McCurry, Arnold, Capa, Erwitt, and of course, HCB plus
several others.

Turns out, I wandered by on the last day of the exhibit. Of course, I was
in Heaven! To see actual prints of some of the most famous photos ever
taken was at once inspiring and humbling. Afghan Girl, Death of a Loyalist
Soldier, Omaha Beach, Nixon and Kruschev, Mother Holding Newborn's Hand (I
know these aren't the exact titles, but I'm sure you all know to what I'm
referring) - it was unbeleivable.

There's a point here, and I'm getting to it. <vbg> There was one HCB, the
famous image of the French boy with the wine bottles, huge grin on his
face. Truly amazing!!

I wonder if Henri looked around for a parent, and then asked permission to
photograph the child? Can you imagine such a thing? I can't!

I know we live in a different world, but please feel free to draw whatever
conclusion(s) you want from this...

regards,
frank
