The book "Magnum - Fifty Years at the Front Line of History" by
Russell Miller contains some very interesting comments aboutr HCB's
photographic habits. On page 103 the author writes, "He (HCB)
preferred to use rubber jam jar covers instead of lens caps, for
example, and tied them with to his Leica with a length of shoelace.
She (his wife) also discovered that that he used red nail varnish to
mark his favorite shutter speed and distance - 1/125 of a second and 4
meters."
