There is an extremely important point being missed in this discussion -

If, like Ernie, one finds that one's current digital camera does what
one wants/needs it to do, no one and nothing is compelling one to
constantly - or essentially ever, upgrade. The only people who at this
point are being forced to constantly upgrade are pros who must dance to
the tune played by clients.

(I have a good friend who is a very successful freelance writer and
author - cranking out a new book...for very good money...about every 18
months. It is only in the past year that he finally dumped his 386
computer and Xywrite and "moved up" to a Pentium 4 and Microsoft Office.
He could do what he needed to do with what all the manufacturers and
marketing types would tell him was obsolete technology. So it is with
digital.)

And the analogy is a strong one - many of the upgrades to our computers
don't necessarily mean increased productivity - they are mandated by
the computer/software folks. I have yet to run out of megapixels on my
6 MP digicam for the type of work that I do.
