In a word: Don't.  Send it to a qualified technician to get it done.  
Or at the very least, get a beat-up M3 that you can practice on before 
you go screwing around with your wife's treasured M3.  You can get a 
"Leica M3 Factory Repair Manual" on the unmentionable auction site for 
$40 (no, it's not my auction).  See also this link:
