You've almost got it right, Rolfe.  If the switch is 'on', but the shutter 
release is not depressed, there is only the tiniest amount of power being 
drawn, just enough so the CPU can sense when the button has been pressed 
and turn the rest of the camera on.  Over the life of a set of batteries, 
the difference in life might be 2% based on always turning the power switch 
off or not.

Frankly, I never remember to turn the damned switch off (though I'm getting 
better!) and the half shot batteries that came with my demo camera still 
lasted over a year of fairly heavy shooting!
