Larry,

What you're missing is the evocative quality of photography. The conceptual 
knowledge that it was made at a specific time and place. It's what we know 
about photography that makes it a document of reality. That's what makes a Brady 
print of Lincoln so powerful and a shot of someone you really care for 
significant.
