After reading Ted's post and your response, I had another look at the 
images.  I have to agree with Ted on all three.  I don't think it's a 
matter of detail as it is an overall softness.

I am using a Sony Flatscreen Trinitrom that is regularly calibrated.

  Could it be the scan?
