It is not ridiculous at all. There is a plane of optimum focus - he's 
not talking about the film plane, he's talking about the other end. And 
the fact of the matter is, there is one plane where focus is optimum. 
It shows in photos where the subjects eyes are not the sharpest part of 
the photo. The longer the lens, the more important it becomes. But even 
with wide angle lenses, there's a perceptible best point of focus in 
many photos, and if the subject's eyes (assuming you're photographing 
people) is not in that plane, the photo suffers.
