That's my preferred lens carrying method. I even have a geeky photovest if 
I want to carry more than one extra lens. It bit me on the as* once though. 
I have a whole roll of pictures that have junk on the upper edge, probably 
due to the lens being dirty and I didn't check carefully.... If I have 
careful put the lens in and out its pouch/carrying case, may be I would 
have noticed....
