This hasn't got a damn thing to do with what downtown has become - it
has to do with a. digital; b. competition from high volume retailers -
not necessarily on the web; and c. general lack of interest in high-end,
specialty film cameras.

I reckon the smart Leica retailer will design a formidable Web page and 
operate out of a small warehouse in Queens.  Downtown in large cities
will be for 
boutiques and bistros and banks and theaters. I watched the decline of
the 
dedicated photo stores in NYC for two decades. It just came to a head
with digital 
and Web distribution.
