The origin of the terms oriental and occidental go back to Greco-Roman 
times and are thus quite ancient. If you came from Europe or the Levant 
you were considered occidental, if you came from the area east of 
present day Iran (Persia) you were oriental.

Someone living in Lebanon, Syria or Egypt was considered every bit as 
much an Occidental as a Roman, Greek or a Gaul. If your home country was 
India, China or Japan you were considered to be Oriental in origin.

The suggestion that these terms originated with the advent of the 
British Empire is just plain wrong. Britain was thousands of years in 
the future.
