He said it was an Asian thing,  Hickock was hardly an Asian.

When I lived in Japan, I found that the word for "death" was the
same as the word for "four". (shi)  There are about five other
words that translate to "shi".

I never heard of anything bad attributed to 1 (ichi) in Japanese.

The correct term for this is superstition.
