That's not impossible..Don't forget, one of the advantages of digital is
being able to change iso in "mid-roll"...so even on a beach at noon
under a cloudless sky, crank the iso down to 100 and at my top speed of
1/4000th, I could shoot at f 2.8. And in most cases, one isn't shooting
on a beach at noon under a cloudless sky....

All theoretical, I know...But the point is that the lower ISO and higher
available shutter speeds do make shooting wide open possible...
