I wanted to do that myself, but I wasn't looking for woods. You have your own backyard, Volo Bog or Marine Hills: http://www.rollei-gallery.net/ridings/image-49823.html (Fox Lake/McHenry/Ingleside area). Two hours north is probably where you want to go. My mother stayed at a good "hotel" (more like a resort) in the Wisconsin woods this last summer. Cost an arm and a leg so you'd probably be hanging around in the resort to get your money's worth instead of rummaging around in the woods. I'm sure there are plenty of other places though.
