The good lord have mercy on your soul if you blew a shift in a truck with back to back four and five speed transmissions -- no split axles in those days. Racing has now moved on to computer controlled shifting. The driver only works a paddle up or down to go through the gears and the computer operates the clutch and shift mechanism.
