In the old days where the actual gears were moved in and out of
alignment, you double clutched up and down. The good lord have mercy on
your soul if you blew a shift in a truck with back to back four and
five speed transmissions -- no split axles in those days.

Racing has now moved on to computer controlled shifting. The driver
only works a paddle up or down to go through the gears and the computer
operates the clutch and shift mechanism.
