Howard,

Thin negs scan much better than dense ones. Try scanning your silver B&W
negs as 'Color Negative'. You can still save them as greyscale. I have found
this helps to dig some highlight detail out of dense negs. Also, try
adjusting the gain with your Nikonscan software.
