Also in Canon's favor, my Elan 7 sounds quieter, to my ears, than my 
M7, if I'm not shooting at a rapid clip. I'm sure it is louder and I'm 
just more used to motor-whine (and probably paying more attention to 
the Leica), but there's not a lot of difference.

It is, by far, quieter than any other modern (film) SLR I've heard.
