You know, why don't we give the poor student a break? She's not a web
developer, nor is she a member of the W3 standards committee (Heaven
forbid!). Just a creative individual using a very convenient medium for
displaying her work. So she's got fat files. What, are we being size-ist in
here now? ;-)

Not it isn't, it works just fine. But 400KB is 400KB is 400KB. Per
image.

There is no worming around this. The image filesizes here are
unnecessarily bloated.

I'll put it another way, why send a 40 page fax when you can send
exactly the same message on only two pages?

For those who (mistakenly) think this is a non-issue, have a look
at the Web Standards trend in website coding. One of the many
driving forces behind it is to cut the amount of html code in pages
in half in order to reduce server loads and traffic costs. Why do
you think professional coders want to do this? Perversity?

<http://www.w3.org/WAI/EO/Drafts/bcase/tech.html>

I said it before and I'll say it again - bandwidth is neither infinite
or free.

Your students want to communicate their work to others. What
does it say of them if they don't give a damn how much it costs
others in time, traffic & money to view their work?

(Sheesh - I would have thought this was all pretty obvious and
non-controversial. Especially since I made an effort here to
avoid discussing the aesthetic merits - or otherwise - of the sites
mentioned!)

:?)
