Believe me Mark, the computer doesn't have to be left on in order to be
damaged with lightening strikes. It's enough that you have a power cable
in the wall-socket or a network cable hooked up to a hub (love those
wireless networks).

Happened to me in August of 2002. The whole house got zapped.
