It is both a waste of electricity and does do a certain damage to the
atmosphere....  A laptop computer itself uses about as much electricity as a
night light, a desktop uses about as much as a 60 w bulb.  Would you leave a
60 w bulb on at your house if you were gone for 3 weeks?  I doubt it.
But you might leave on a night light.

However more important is the damage that could be done to your data if
something happens to your power lines.  Shut it off if you are gone a Glitch
( regardless of your UPS ( uninterruptible power supply)  size or quality)
can get to your computer and make files or programs get scrambled.
