Just as you stated - folks wanting to "own and charge for use of the format" 
- also I've heard that .jpg2 or 3 or something will make former .jpg files 
unreadable in ways similar to trying to read an early pagemaker file. Rumors 
which I don't fully understand.

Definitely not a Dell guy. Mac since '85. All my external drives, with the 
exception of one iomega-zip, have been MicroNet which stood behind their 
product with great support all through the 90's. Never had a failure. Then 
they sort of disappeared for a while. And when I went out looking for 
external firewire/USB drives I saw they were back. Bought a 120 and an 80 
gig. And the 80 firewire blew out in a month. Drive replaced under warranty. 
And now about 2 years later I can't recognize the drive on any of the three 
macs using either firewire or USB.
