They are exceptionally well written. "H.M.S. Surprse" and "Mauritius Campaign" are two of the early ones. They're out in paper, at used book stores, probably all over the world and in a variety of translations. BUT...while they are wonderful sea stories they form a vast extended novel that is also on essay on friendship, the British Navy, life in the early part of the ninteenth century. And they are written in the prose style of the time, or better put, Jane Austen's time really. Still, they are wonderful and the only place you're likely to read "Jack, you've debauched my sloth!" "Master and Commander" was written as a one-off but then they commissioned "Post Captain" and the ball began rolling. You really can start almost anywhere but "HMS Surprise" is probably one of the best. It'll tell you if you like the style. If you get hooked...well...you have a few years of delight as you work your way through the series which I have read several times and listen to as audio books on long trips.
